- by Radu Cotarcea
1010data has announced the publication of it’s latest study on the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Market, which points to “strong online sales for key categories within the sector.”
According to 1010data, which offers an integrated platform that combines self-service data management and analytics, the survey shows that "when compared to the first half of 2015, CPG online sales grew 42% across key categories in the first half of 2016. If present trends continue, 1010data estimates that online sales in the U.S. will surpass USD 10 billion for these categories for the first time in history.” The report summary published by the company added: "Overall, 1010data Market Insights points to a significant shift towards online shopping, from USD 5 billion in 2014 to USD 7 billion in 2015 and to this year’s projected USD 10 billion in e-commerce revenue for key categories in the CPG sector. 1010data further shows that consumers’ in-store spending is flat and nearly all of the modest 4% annual growth in consumer spending is happening from growth in e-commerce.”
In terms of categories of sales, the findings of the survey show that Health and Supplements and Pet Care are the largest ones in terms of overall revenue with the first already surpassing USD 1 billion in online sales and the second passing the USD 700 million mark. While smaller in comparison in terms of overall sales (USD 40 million), Laundry and Dish was reported to be the fastest growing category.
Natalie Seidman, Senior Vice President of Data Insights at 1010data, commented: "Our data shows that online challengers are making a big impression in their market segments because e-commerce helps them achieve massive growth without the high up-front costs that traditional CPG companies must incur in marketing, distribution and product visibility at brick-and-mortar stores. Leveraging e-commerce insights can enable CPG brands to better compete in the rapidly evolving online shopping world, their primary opportunity for revenue growth in US.”
